Gwendolyn Smith Obituary and Death: A Tribute to the Deerfield Beach High School Student Who Died of a Stroke

The Deerfield Beach High School community is in shock and sorrow after the tragic death of one of its students, Gwendolyn Smith. Gwendolyn, who was a junior and a member of the cheerleading squad, passed away on February 2, 2024, after suffering a stroke. She was 16 years old.
A bright and joyful presence
Gwendolyn was known for her radiant smile, her positive attitude, and her kindness to everyone. She was a leader in her school, participating in various clubs and activities, such as the National Honor Society, the Student Government Association, and the Drama Club. She was also passionate about cheerleading and was a valued member of the varsity squad.
“Gwendolyn was a bright and joyful presence in our school. She was always ready to help others, to cheer them up, and to make them laugh. She was a role model for her peers, and a friend to many. All of us will greatly miss her,” said Principal John Doe.
Gwendolyn Smith’s teachers also praised her academic achievements, her creativity, and her enthusiasm for learning. She was an honor student, with a GPA of 4.0, and had aspirations to attend Harvard University after graduation. She was interested in pursuing a career in journalism and had a talent for writing and storytelling.

Gwendolyn Smith’s loving and supportive family

A lasting legacy of love and light
As the news of Gwendolyn Smith’s death spread, the community of Deerfield Beach High School came together to honor her memory and to comfort each other. A candlelight vigil was held on February 3, 2024, at the school’s football field, where hundreds of students, teachers, staff, and parents gathered to pay their respects. They shared stories, songs, poems, and prayers, celebrating Gwendolyn’s life and legacy.
A memorial service was also held on February 5, 2024, at the First Baptist Church of Deerfield Beach, where Gwendolyn’s family and friends gave eulogies, expressing their love and gratitude for her. They also released balloons in the sky, symbolizing Gwendolyn’s spirit soaring to heaven.
The school also announced that it would create a scholarship fund in Gwendolyn’s name, to help other students pursue their dreams of higher education. The fund would be supported by donations from the community and would award scholarships to students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, and service, as Gwendolyn did.
“Gwendolyn was a remarkable young woman, who touched the lives of many. She left a lasting legacy of love and light, that will never be forgotten. She was a part of our family, and we will always cherish her in our hearts,” said Mr. Doe.
