Birthday, Education, Parents, Siblings
Tim Scott was born on September 19, 1965, in North Charleston, South Carolina. He is the second son of Frances Scott, a nurse who worked long hours to support her family, and Ben Scott Sr., a Vietnam vet and Air Force officer who left the family when Tim was 7 years old. He grew up in a poor, single-parent household, sharing a room and a bed with his mother and older brother at his grandparents’ small, dirt road house. His grandfather, who left school in the third grade to pick cotton, could not read or write but pretended to read the newspaper every day. One of his brother names is Ben Scott Jr.

He struggled academically in his early years, failing four classes in his freshman year of high school. He credits his mother, who instilled in him the values of hard work, faith, and discipline, and his mentor, John Moniz, a conservative businessman who owned a Chick-fil-A near his school, for turning his life around. Moniz introduced Tim to the principles of free enterprise, individual responsibility, and conservative politics, and encouraged him to read books by successful entrepreneurs and leaders.
He graduated from R.B. Stall High School in 1983 and attended Presbyterian College for one year on a partial football scholarship. He then transferred to Charleston Southern University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1988. He was also the president of the student body and a member of the Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity.
Career and Politics

After graduating from college, he pursued a career in business, working as a financial adviser for American Express and later founding his own insurance agency, Tim Scott Allstate. He also became involved in local politics, serving on the Charleston County Council from 1995 to 2008, and the South Carolina House of Representatives from 2009 to 2010. He was the first Black Republican elected to the state legislature since 1902.
In 2010, Tim ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in South Carolina’s 1st congressional district, defeating nine other candidates in the Republican primary and winning the general election with 65% of the vote. He was one of two Black Republicans elected to the House that year, along with Allen West of Florida. He was re-elected in 2012 with 62% of the vote.
In 2013, Tim was appointed by Governor Nikki Haley to fill the vacant Senate seat of Jim DeMint, who resigned to lead the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank. He became the first Black senator from South Carolina and the first Black Republican senator since Edward Brooke of Massachusetts, who served from 1967 to 1979. He won a special election in 2014 to complete DeMint’s term, and was elected to his first full term in 2016 with 61% of the vote. He is currently the only Black Republican in the Senate, and one of three Black senators, along with Democrats Cory Booker of New Jersey and Raphael Warnock of Georgia.
As a senator, Tim has been a staunch conservative, supporting lower taxes, limited government, school choice, pro-life policies, and strong national defense. He has also been a vocal advocate for criminal justice reform, police accountability, and economic opportunity for minority communities. He has sponsored several bills on these issues, such as the Opportunity Zones Act, which provides tax incentives for investments in low-income areas, the JUSTICE Act, which proposes reforms to police training and practices, and the CHOICE Act, which expands educational options for low-income students.
Tim Scott has also been a loyal ally of former President Donald Trump, endorsing him in 2016 and 2020, and voting to acquit him in both impeachment trials. He has praised Trump’s economic policies, judicial appointments, and foreign policy achievements, while occasionally criticizing his rhetoric and behavior. He has also defended Trump against accusations of racism, saying that he does not believe that America or Trump are racist.
He has also been a target of racism himself, facing insults, threats, and harassment from both the left and the right. He has been called an “Uncle Tom”, a “token”, and a “sellout” by some of his critics, and has been stopped by Capitol Police who did not recognize him as a senator. He has also received hate mail and death threats, and has been doxxed online. He has responded to these attacks with grace and dignity, saying that he forgives his enemies and prays for them.

Tim Scott, the Black Republican Senator Who Almost Became President, Gets Engaged to His Longtime Girlfriend

Tim Scott, the 58-year-old senator from South Carolina who made history as the only Black person to serve in both chambers of Congress, has announced his engagement to his girlfriend of over a year, Mindy Noce, an interior designer and mother of three.
Scott shared the happy news on X on Sunday 21st January 2023, posting a photo of him proposing to Noce on a beach on Kiawah Island, a resort town near Charleston. He also posted another photo of Noce showing off her ring, and captioned the post with a quote from the Bible: “She said YES. Mindy, thank you for making me the luckiest man in the world. ‘He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord’ – Proverbs 18:22”.

Scott and Noce met through mutual friends in 2023, and started dating shortly after. Scott publicly introduced Noce as his girlfriend at a Republican debate in November 2023, when he was still running for president. He was the only bachelor among the candidates, and some conservative voters had expressed doubts about his marital status.
Scott, however, said that he was not ready to make his relationship public until he was sure that he wanted to marry Noce. “I can’t imagine dragging her onto the campaign trail unless I have the intention of marrying her,” he said in September 2023. “I hope that happens, to be honest with you.”
Scott dropped out of the presidential race in December 2023, after failing to gain enough support from the Republican base. He endorsed Donald Trump, the former president who was seeking a second term, on Friday, saying that he was the best choice to lead the country and the party. Scott’s endorsement came as a surprise to some, as he had clashed with Trump on some issues, such as his response to the racial violence in Charlottesville in 2017, and his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Scott has received congratulations from his colleagues and supporters, including far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who tweeted “Congratulations!” to Scott and Noce. Scott’s spokesperson said that the couple celebrated their engagement with a dinner on Saturday night, and that Noce attended church with Scott on Sunday morning, wearing her ring.
