He replaced Anjani Kumar, who was suspended by the Election Commission of India (ECI) for allegedly violating the model code of conduct during the vote counting of the state assembly elections.
Who is Ravi Gupta?
Ravi is a 1990-batch IPS officer who has served in various capacities in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, the two states that were bifurcated in 2014. Why was Anjani Kumar suspended?
Anjani Kumar, the outgoing DGP, was suspended by the ECI because he had met the president of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC), A. Revanth Reddy, at his residence on December 2, 2023, while the vote counting of the state assembly elections was underway. The ECI said that this was a violation of the model code of conduct, which prohibits any interaction between the police and the political parties during the election process.
The ECI also directed the Chief Secretary of Telangana to initiate disciplinary action against Kumar and submit a report within 15 days. The ECI said that Kumar’s meeting with Reddy was “unwarranted, uncalled for and a serious lapse on the part of the DGP” and that it had “created a doubt in the minds of the public about the impartiality and neutrality of the police”.
The TPCC, however, defended Kumar and said that he had gone to Reddy’s residence to inquire about his health, as he had tested positive for COVID-19. The TPCC also accused the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) of pressurizing the ECI to suspend Kumar, as he had refused to act on their complaints against the opposition parties.
