The Renewed Hope Grant for Vulnerable Groups is a program initiated by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in 2023, to provide financial assistance to poor and vulnerable people in Nigeria. The program targets four states: Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Lagos, and Ogun. The program is funded by the NSIPA, an agency under the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, which oversees the implementation of the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP).

The NSIP is a flagship initiative of the Federal Government of Nigeria, launched in 2016, to tackle poverty and hunger, create jobs, and empower Nigerians. What has been the reaction of the authorities?
On January 10, 2024, President Bola Tinubu, who succeeded President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023, suspended Betta Edu from her position as the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and ordered an investigation into her ministry. The president also directed the EFCC to probe the allegations of fraud in the NSIPA and to recover any misappropriated funds.

The EFCC invited Betta Edu, Oniyelu Bridget Mojisola, and two other officials of the NSIPA, Toluhi Martins Olarewaju and Christopher Okoh Joseph, who were allegedly appointed as signatories to the NSIPA account by the Accountant General of the Federation, for questioning. The EFCC also froze the accounts of the suspects and seized their passports and other documents.
Betta Edu, in a statement issued by her media aide, Rasheed Zubair, denied any wrongdoing and claimed that the N585 million was approved and meant for the implementation of grants to vulnerable groups in the four states. She also defended Oniyelu Bridget Mojisola, saying that she was the project accountant for GVG from the Department of Finance and that it was legal in civil service for staff to be paid and use the same funds legally and retire the same with all receipts and evidence after the project or program was completed.
The statement read:
The Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, has noted with dismay that a memo from the Ministry to the Accountant General of the Federation approving for payment the sum of N585,189,500.00 Renewed Hope Grant for Vulnerable Groups for four states is now being circulated on social media.
It is glaring that the same sponsored disgruntled elements in the past few days have been trying to smear the Honourable Minister and stain her integrity because she alerted the Federal Government to the ongoing N44.8 billion fraud in the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA). These elements have been trying to link the Honourable Minister to a phantom fraud and are behind this latest misadventure.
However, this latest vile effort of theirs is another infantile blackmail doomed for evisceration.
For the avoidance of doubt, the said N585,198,500.00 was approved, and it is meant for the implementation of grants to vulnerable groups in Akwa Ibom,
