Wananchi Online
Wananchi Group Holdings is a leading internet service provider in East Africa, with a multi-million dollar valuation. It was co-founded in 1999 by Rionge and Joseph Mucheru, who later became the ICT Cabinet Secretary of Kenya. They had both worked for Inter-Connect, another local ISP, for three years before starting their own venture. Their first products were launched in April 2000, with three main goals: to provide fast and affordable internet access to all Kenyans, to establish a strong brand that would cater to both corporate and individual customers, and to create a company that would enable every ‘mwananchi’ (common man) to own and participate in the future growth of the telecommunications sector in Kenya and beyond.

In 2002, Wananchi Online achieved a milestone by becoming the first internet service provider in Kenya and East Africa to obtain ISO 9000:2000 Business Quality Systems Certification. This ensured that Wananchi Online delivered consistent quality and professional services to its customers. In the same year, Wananchi Online introduced a revolutionary pricing policy for internet connectivity, making the internet more affordable and accessible to the Kenyan market.

The pricing policy involved a drastic reduction in internet connectivity charges by 85 – 90% compared to the competitors. This caused a major shift in the market dynamics for Wananchi Online and its rivals. A Shocking Discovery
Rionge’s death was revealed after police discovered mass graves in a forest near the coastal town of Malindi, where she and hundreds of her followers had allegedly moved to live in isolation. The graves were marked with wooden crosses and contained the remains of children and adults, some of whom showed signs of starvation, suffocation, and beatings.
Police suspect that Rionge was the leader of a religious cult that convinced its members to starve themselves to death in order to meet God. According to a former deputy preacher of the cult, Titus Katana, who is helping the police with the investigation, children were targeted as the first to be killed, ordered “to fast in the sun so they would die faster.” Women and men were next to follow the suicide plan.

Katana also described the alleged brutal treatment of the children, saying they were shut in huts for five days without food or water. “Then they wrapped them in blankets and buried them, even the ones still breathing,” he was quoted as saying by The Sunday Times.
More than 600 people who are reported to be members of the doomsday cult are still missing. Police are continuing to exhume bodies from the mass graves and search for survivors.
