He also played in several national and international amateur events, such as the Junior Ryder Cup, the Junior Presidents Cup, and the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley.
Amateur Career
Nick’s biggest achievement as an amateur came in 2021 when he won the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at the Country Club of North Carolina. He defeated Cohen Trolio 3 and 2 in the 36-hole final, becoming the second player from Alabama to win the prestigious title, after Hubert Green in 1968. He also earned an exemption to play in the 2022 U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.
Professional Career
Nick decided to turn pro in 2022, after graduating from high school. He had committed to play college golf at the University of Alabama but opted to skip college and pursue his dream of playing on the PGA Tour. He signed endorsement deals with Nike, Titleist, and Rolex, and hired his father as his caddie.

Nick made his professional debut at the Sony Open in Hawaii in January 2022, where he missed the cut by one stroke. He then played in several Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamérica events, earning enough points to qualify for the Korn Ferry Tour Finals. He secured his PGA Tour card for the 2022-23 season by finishing 21st in the Finals.
Nick’s breakthrough moment as a pro came in March 2023, when he won the Puerto Rico Open, his first PGA Tour title. He shot a final-round 66 to beat Branden Grace by one stroke, becoming the youngest winner on the PGA Tour since Jordan Spieth in 2013. He also became the first player to win both the U.S. Junior Amateur and the Puerto Rico Open, joining the likes of Tiger Woods, Johnny Miller, and David Duval, who have won the U.S. Junior Amateur and a PGA Tour event.

Nick’s win in Puerto Rico earned him a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour, as well as invitations to the 2023 Masters Tournament, the 2023 PGA Championship, and the 2023 Players Championship. He also moved up to 87th in the world ranking, the highest-ranked player under 21 years old.
Controversies
However, Nick Dunlap’s win at the American Express in 2024 did spark some debate and criticism among some golf experts and fans, who questioned the fairness and validity of his victory. Some argued that he had an unfair advantage over the professional golfers, as he did not have to deal with the pressure and expectations of playing for money and points.

Some also claimed that he did not deserve to win, as he was not a full-time member of the PGA Tour and had not earned his spot through qualifying or ranking. Some even suggested that he should have turned pro before the tournament and forfeited his amateur status, as he was ready to play at the highest level.
