What did Godejohn and Gypsy Rose do?
Godejohn and Gypsy Rose fell in love and planned to escape from Dee Dee’s control. They met in person for the first time in 2015 at a movie theater, where they had sex in the bathroom. Gypsy Rose then asked Godejohn to kill her mother, saying that it was the only way they could be together. Godejohn agreed and traveled to Springfield, Missouri, where the Blanchards lived. On June 14, 2015, he stabbed Dee Dee to death in her bedroom while Gypsy Rose hid in the bathroom. The couple then fled to Godejohn’s home in Wisconsin, where they were arrested days later.

Nicholas Godejohn’s trial began in November 2018. His defense team argued that he had a low IQ, autism spectrum disorder, and diminished capacity and that he acted under the influence of Gypsy Rose. They also claimed that he was in love and wanted to rescue Gypsy Rose from her abusive mother. The prosecution, however, portrayed him as a cold-blooded killer who knew what he was doing and had a violent and sexual fantasy of murdering Dee Dee. They also presented evidence that he had searched online for information on how to kill someone and what to do after killing someone.
Sentence & Aftermath
The jury found Godejohn guilty of first-degree murder and armed criminal action after less than two hours of deliberation. He was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole plus 25 years by Judge David Jones, who denied his motion for a new trial. Godejohn’s attorney, Dewayne Perry, said that he planned to appeal the verdict and the sentence.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard, on the other hand, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in 2016 and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. She is eligible for parole in December 2023. She has expressed remorse for her role in the murder and said that she still loves Godejohn. She has also claimed that she is happier in prison than she was with her mother.
Godejohn’s case has attracted widespread media attention and public interest. It has been featured in several documentaries, such as HBO’s Mommy Dead and Dearest, and a limited series on Hulu, The Act, starring Joey King and Patricia Arquette. It has also raised awareness and debate about the issues of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, child abuse, mental illness, and online dating.
