It shows that Rizwan Khan (played by Shah Rukh Khan) is a Muslim, who lives with his widowed mother named Razia and brother named Zakir in Borivali, Mumbai. He has a problem with autism which led to special tutoring from a reclusive scholar and immense care from his mother. All these things increased the jealousy of Zakir and left his life and moved to San Francisco. After the death of Razia, Zakir calls Rizwan to him through sponsorship.
The wife of Zakir named Haseena diagnoses Rizwan as having Asperger syndrome, which is a neurodevelopment disorder. However, Rizwan began working for Zakir. Then he meets Mandira (a Hindu woman) and his son named Sameer from his previous wedding. They got wedded and began living in Banville and she adopted Rizwan’s surname.
Rizwan’s life started disrupted after the September 11 attacks. The things got worse when their friend of Sameer goes against him which led to a huge fight on a soccer ground.
