In reality, that person was an undercover FBI agent.
As per the investigation they went to West Virginia, where Jonathan placed a memory card inside half a peanut butter sandwich, with his wife on the lookout. According to the authorities, the card contained confidential data about submarine nuclear reactors. To gain their trust regarding the same the FBI agent first gave them $10,000 in cryptocurrency on June 8, 2021.
After that, the couple demanded a $20,000 cryptocurrency payment, and this time Jonathan Toebbe emailed the undercover agent a decryption key for the SD Card. Not only this the couple drops their second SD card in eastern Virginia. The card was placed in a chewing gum package. After making a payment of $70,000 in cryptocurrency to Jonathan, the FBI received a decryption key for the card.
While dropping the care for the third time at a pre-arranged second location in West Virginia the FBI team arrested the couple red-handed on October 9, 2021.
