According to Wikipedia, Elesin Oba is based on a true story and takes place in Oyo Town, Nigeria, in the 1940s. The king has just passed away, and according to tradition, Elesin Oba, the king’s horseman, must commit ritual suicide in order to join his deceased king in the afterlife. This is done so that the king can enter the land of the gods unhindered, thereby preventing calamity from occurring in the community.
However, Elesin Oba neglects his duty due to his sexual appetites, which eventually leads to a deadly confrontation with the British, which has the horseman’s ghost wanders the earth when he fails to fulfill his final obligation to the king, bringing disaster to the land and its inhabitants.
