Dr. Lim Boo Liat (born on August 21, 1926, age: 93 when died) was an expert Zoologist and a conservationist from Malaysia. Throughout his life, he had done research on small animals and insects. He was the author of the more than 300 scientific publications about mammalogy (the brand of zoology concerned with the study of mammals), and parasitology (the scientific discipline concerned with the study of biology relating to parasites and parasitical diseases).

Dr. Lim Boo Liat’s biography details have been shared by Wikipedia after his death on 11 July 2020. He was born on 21st August 1926. When Lim Boo Liat died he was only 93 years old. He was a native of Klang, Selangor, Federated Malay States, British Malaya (now Malaysia.) When Dr. Lim Boo Liat reached his sixteenth year of age he faced difficulty in pursuing his interest in insects and small animals studies due to World War II. When World War II reached Malaya he faced financial issues in his life and did an odd job to support his family.
At that time Dr. Lim Boo Liat went to Carey Island (an Island in Selangor, Malaysia) and set up the machinery to harvest salt from seawater in order to earn money. Along with harvesting salt, Lim Boo Liat didn’t leave his passion for learning things related to animals and kept on learning about the insects available near the Island. During his time on Island, Dr. Lim Boo Liat learned techniques to observe animals from the people of the Orang Asli community. He based on his research on Island applied for a job as a temporary Lab assistant at the Institute of Medical Research (IMR), after the war in 1947.
After this, Dr. Lim Boo Liat got a permanent job as Lab Assistant and then continued achieving his Degree. His capabilities allowed a few professors of European Universities to offer Lim Boo to complete his master’s degree from the University of Aberdeen. He got the Medical Research Council Fellowship in 1969 for completing his master’s degree from the University of Aberdeen. Before it, in 1959 Lim was already honored with a Sini-British Fellowship Trust Award for spending more than one-year researching animal ecology and taxonomy of Mammals. He researched animal ecology and the taxonomy of mammals at Oxford University. Later in 1977, Lim Boo Liat became the first person to get the honors of a Ph.D. from the University Sain Malaysia.

After Dr. Lim Boo Liat got his first professional job as a temporary Lab Assistant at Institute for Medical Research (IMR) in Kuala Lumpur after World War II he got selected as a permanent employee there. Then his further research based on small mammals and parasites allowed him to travel to southeast Asia under the auspices of the Bishop Museum. In 1972 after completing his Master’s degree he came back to IMR and started working as the head of the IMR’s Medical Ecology Division.
In 1977 Lim Boo Liat served as the head of the Vector Biology Control Research Unit of the World Health Organization in Jakarta, Indonesia. Till 1987 he served for WHO and retired in the same year. Following his retirement, he worked as a consultant on zoology for the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia. Dr. Lim Boo Liat remained famous for writing books like Poisonous Snakes of Peninsula Malaysia (1979), Orang Asli Animal Tales (1981), and Turtles of Borneo (1999). He has written more than 300 scientific papers.
