According to the Royal St Vincent and Grenadines police force, the plane that Oliver and his daughters were on was a single-engine Cessna 172 Skyhawk, owned and piloted by Robert Sachs, a resident of Bequia, a small island belonging to the nation of St Vincent and the Grenadines. The plane took off from the J.F. Mitchell Airport in Bequia at approximately 12.10 pm local time, headed for the Hewanorra International Airport in St Lucia, a neighboring island.

However, shortly after takeoff, the plane encountered some difficulties and plunged into the sea, just west of Petit Nevis, a tiny private island near Bequia. The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the authorities.
Fishermen, divers, and members of the Coast Guard rushed to the scene of the crash and were able to recover the four bodies of the people on board the plane. Christian Klepser, his daughters Madita Klepser, Annik Klepser, and Robert Sachs were all pronounced dead at the scene by medical staff.
The coast guard brought the bodies to a local mortuary by boat, and autopsies meant to determine their exact causes of death were pending on Friday.
