David de Gea Wins Second Golden Glove Award in Premier League 2022/23 Season

David de Gea, the Manchester United goalkeeper, has won the prestigious Golden Glove award for the 2022/23 Premier League season. The award is given to the goalkeeper who keeps the most clean sheets in a season.
De Gea has kept 17 clean sheets in 37 matches so far, and cannot be caught by any other goalkeeper in the final matchday. His closest rival, Alisson of Liverpool, has 14 clean sheets and conceded a goal to Aston Villa on Saturday.
This is the second time that De Gea has won the Golden Glove award, after achieving it in 2017/18 with 18 clean sheets. He is only the fourth goalkeeper to win the award twice, after Petr Cech, Joe Hart and Ederson.
A team effort
De Gea has been in superb form this season, making some spectacular saves and commanding his area with confidence. He has also been helped by a solid defensive unit in front of him, featuring players like Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Manchester United have conceded only 29 goals in 37 matches, the second-lowest in the league after Manchester City. They have also kept 12 clean sheets at home, the most by any team.
De Gea has praised his teammates for their contribution to his success, saying: “It’s a great achievement for me and for the team. I’m very happy with this award, but I have to thank my teammates for their work and their support. We have defended very well as a team and that’s why we have so many clean sheets.”
A remarkable season
De Gea’s Golden Glove award caps off a remarkable season for him and for Manchester United. The Red Devils have finished third in the Premier League, securing a place in next season’s Champions League. They have also reached the final of the Europa League, where they will face Sevilla on Wednesday.
De Gea has been one of the standout performers for United this season, earning several accolades along the way. He was named as the Premier League Player of the Month for January 2022, after keeping four clean sheets and making 19 saves in four matches. He also won the Save of the Month award for February 2022, for his incredible reflex save from Kelechi Iheanacho’s header in a 3-0 win over Leicester City.
De Gea will be hoping to add more silverware to his collection on Wednesday, when he will aim to keep another clean sheet and help United lift their first trophy under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
A world-class goalkeeper
De Gea joined Manchester United from Atletico Madrid in 2011, and has since established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. He has made over 400 appearances for United, winning one Premier League title, one FA Cup, one League Cup and one Europa League.
He has also been voted as the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year four times by United fans, more than any other player in history. He has been named in the PFA Team of the Year five times and in the FIFA FIFPro World XI three times.
De Gea is also Spain’s first-choice goalkeeper, having earned 57 caps for his country. He was part of Spain’s squad that won the UEFA Euro 2012 and reached the semi-finals of UEFA Euro 2020.
De Gea is widely regarded as one of the finest shot-stoppers of his generation, with his agility, reflexes and composure setting him apart from his peers. He has also improved his distribution, communication and aerial ability over the years, becoming a more complete goalkeeper.
De Gea’s Golden Glove award is a testament to his quality and consistency as a goalkeeper, and a reward for his hard work and dedication to Manchester United.
