Who was Mauris Noronha?
Mauris Noronha, also known as Mauris Bhai, was a local social activist and influencer in Mumbai’s Borivali area. He ran a voluntary organization and was known for his philanthropic activities, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. He had organized a trip to the Infant Jesus shrine in Nashik for the local residents, scheduled for February 10, 2024.

Mauris Noronha had also aspired to become a corporator in the BMC elections, which were due in 2024. He had reportedly sought support from various political parties, including the BJP, the Shinde faction, and the Ajit Pawar group, to contest the elections. He had a rivalry with Abhishek Ghosalkar over the same seat, which was previously held by Ghosalkar.
Mauris Bhai had also faced serious legal troubles in the past. In 2022, he was arrested for allegedly blackmailing, raping, cheating, and threatening a 48-year-old woman. The charges dated back to 2014, but the complaint was lodged in 2022. He was later released on bail.
What happened on February 8, 2024?
On February 8, 2024, Abhishek Ghosalkar and Mauris Noronha decided to end their enmity and join hands for the development of the IC Colony, a suburb of Borivali. They arranged a Facebook live session to announce their reconciliation and to invite people for the Nashik trip. The live session was held at Mauris Bhai’s office in IC Colony.
In the video, which has been widely circulated on the internet, both Ghosalkar and Noronha can be seen sitting on a sofa and smiling. They talk about their friendship and their plans for the future. They also thank each other for their support and cooperation. They end the video by saying “God bless” and “Jai Maharashtra”.

However, moments after the video ended, Mauris Noronha took out a revolver and shot Abhishek Ghosalkar three times in the abdomen and shoulder. He then turned the gun on himself and shot himself in the head. Both of them collapsed on the floor, bleeding profusely.
The entire incident was witnessed by some of their associates and staff members, who were present in the office. They immediately rushed them to a nearby hospital, but it was too late. Both Ghosalkar and Noronha were declared dead on arrival.
What was the motive behind the shooting?
The motive behind the shooting is still unclear and under investigation. The police and the local crime branch are probing the case from various angles, including personal, political, and financial. They have also recovered the revolver and the mobile phone used by Noronha from the crime scene.
Some of the possible motives that have been speculated by the media and the sources are:
- Noronha had a grudge against Abhishek Ghosalkar for not supporting him in his political ambitions and for blocking his entry into the Shiv Sena (UBT) party.
- Mauris Bhai had a mental breakdown due to the stress of the rape case and the political rivalry. He had also posted a cryptic message on his Instagram page 10 days before the incident, which read, “You can’t defeat a man who doesn’t care about pain, loss, disrespect, heartbreak and rejection.”
- Mauris Noronha had planned the shooting in advance and had lured Ghosalkar to his office under the pretext of reconciliation. He had also invited some of his supporters and media persons to witness the incident and to create a sensation.
- Mauris had some financial disputes or debts with Abhishek or his father Vinod Ghosalkar, which led to the confrontation.
What was the reaction to the incident?
The incident has shocked and saddened the people of Mumbai and Maharashtra, who have expressed their condolences and outrage on social media and other platforms. The incident has also triggered a political blame game and a war of words between the Shiv Sena (UBT) party and the ruling coalition.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) party has condemned the incident and has accused the government of failing to maintain law and order in the state. The party has also demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident and a strict action against the culprits. First the firing took place in Kalyan and now it is taking place in Mumbai.”
The ruling coalition, on the other hand, has dismissed the allegations of the Shiv Sena (UBT) party and has called the incident a result of internal feud and personal rivalry. The coalition has also expressed its sympathy and solidarity with the families of the deceased.
The chief minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, said, “This is a very unfortunate and tragic incident. We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. We assure them that the police will conduct a fair and impartial investigation and will bring the truth to light.”
