He also advocated for ending gerrymandering, expanding Medicaid, raising the minimum wage, and protecting the environment.
In 2020, he ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in the newly created 14th Congressional District, which includes parts of Mecklenburg and Gaston counties. He won the Democratic primary with 86% of the vote and the general election with 62% of the vote, becoming the first person to represent the district. He serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Judiciary Committee. He is also a member of the New Democrat Coalition, the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus.
