Gourav Vallabh, Manvendra Singh are among the Congress candidates for the Rajasthan elections
The Congress party on 31 October 2023, Tuesday announced its fourth and final list of candidates for the upcoming Rajasthan assembly elections, which are scheduled to be held on November 25. The list includes 56 names, covering constituencies across the state. Among the notable candidates are national spokesperson Gourav Vallabh, who will contest from Udaipur, and Manvendra Singh, son of the late BJP leader Jaswant Singh, who will fight from Siwana.
The Congress has so far declared 151 candidates out of the total 200 seats in the Rajasthan assembly. The party is in alliance with six smaller parties, namely the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Samajwadi Party, the Communist Party of India, the Bharatiya Tribal Party, the Rashtriya Lok Dal and the Janata Dal (Secular). These parties will contest 49 seats, leaving one seat for an independent candidate.

The Congress is hoping to retain power in Rajasthan, where it won 99 seats in the 2018 elections, ending the BJP’s rule of five years. The party had formed the government with the support of 13 independents and six BSP MLAs, who later merged with the Congress. The party is facing a tough challenge from the BJP, which had won 73 seats in 2018 and has since increased its tally to 70 after winning three by-polls.
The BJP has also announced its candidates for all 200 seats in Rajasthan. The party has not projected any chief ministerial face, unlike in 2018 when it fielded former CM Vasundhara Raje. The party is relying on the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and its state president Satish Poonia to woo the voters. The party has also roped in several leaders from other parties, such as former Congress minister Rajendra Gudha and former BSP MLA Wajib Ali.
The main issues that are likely to dominate the Rajasthan elections are the performance of the Ashok Gehlot-led government, especially its handling of the Covid-19 pandemic and its welfare schemes for farmers, women, and youth; the law and order situation in the state; the caste equations and regional aspirations; and the impact of desertions and defections among various parties.
The following table shows some of the key candidates from both Congress and BJP in Rajasthan:
Constituency | Congress Candidate | BJP Candidate |
---|---|---|
Udaipur | Gourav Vallabh | Gulab Chand Kataria |
Siwana | Manvendra Singh | Shambhu Singh Khetasar |
Tonk | Sachin Pilot | Ajit Singh Mehta |
Jodhpur | Rameshwar Dudi | Kailash Bhansali |
Sardarpura | Ashok Gehlot | Shambhu Singh Khetasar |
Jhalrapatan | Pramod Jain Bhaya | Vasundhara Raje |
