Stan Morgan, a legendary cross-country coach who led Midlothian High School to 12 state titles and mentored many successful runners, passed away on November 10, 2023, at the age of 84. He was surrounded by his loved ones at the time of his death.

Some of his most notable athletes include Jason Dunn, who won the state title in 1991 and later became an All-American at William and Mary; Lori Mann, who won the state title in 1994 and later became an All-American at Virginia Tech; Paige Johnston, who won the state title in 2007 and later became an All-American at Arkansas; and Sean McGorty, who won the state title in 2012 and later became an NCAA champion at Stanford.

Morgan was known for his innovative and effective training methods, his motivational and inspirational speeches, and his ability to develop a strong team culture and bond among his runners. He was also known for his humility and grace, as he always gave credit to his athletes and assistant coaches for their achievements.

Morgan retired from coaching in 2022, after 44 years of service. He was inducted into the Virginia High School Hall of Fame in 2010, and the Virginia Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2018. He was also honored with the National High School Athletic Coaches Association’s Distinguished Service Award in 2019.
