Eric Quinn, a Star of Oglethorpe University’s Golf Program, Dies at 32

Eric Quinn, a former golf champion and assistant coach at Oglethorpe University, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 1, 2023. He was 32 years old. The cause of his death has not been disclosed yet.
Quinn was a beloved figure in the Oglethorpe community, where he left an indelible mark as a player, a leader, and a mentor. He was part of the 2012 NCAA Division III National Champion men’s golf team, which achieved a historic feat for the university. He also coached the women’s golf program to new heights, helping them win several accolades and honors.
A Record-Setting Golfer
Quinn joined Oglethorpe in 2009 from Norcross High School, where he was a standout golfer. He quickly made an impact on the university’s golf program, earning All-American status in 2013 and being named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Player of the Year in 2012.
He was also a two-year captain of the men’s golf team, leading them to victory and a No. 1 national ranking in 2012. He won four major tournaments in his career, placing him fifth all-time in Oglethorpe history. He set an SCAC championship record first round score with his 67 in 2012, while also placing third all time best 54 hole score (213).
Quinn graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 2013, and briefly pursued a professional career on the mini-tour circuit around Georgia. He achieved commendable finishes on the Peach State Pro Tour and the Open Golf Atlanta Tour.
A Dedicated Coach and Mentor
Quinn returned to Oglethorpe in 2015 as an assistant golf coach, where he continued to contribute to the university’s legacy. He was instrumental in coaching the women’s golf program, which saw significant improvement and success under his guidance.

He helped the women’s golf team win the 2016 SCAC championship, their first conference title since 2009. He also coached Sarah Hsu, who became the first All-America first team selection in the program’s history in 2017. He was known for his passion, enthusiasm, and professionalism, as well as his ability to inspire and motivate his players.
Quinn was more than just a coach; he was a friend, a role model, and a family member to many in the Oglethorpe community. He was loved and respected by his colleagues, peers, and students, who admired his character, integrity, and generosity. He was always willing to lend a hand, offer advice, or share a laugh.
