How did Jared die?

On February 16, 2022, Jared Bridegan was gunned down in a targeted ambush as he was driving back to his home after dropping off his two older children with his ex-wife. He was shot twice as he tried to move a car tire that had been left on a residential road nearby. His two-year-old daughter, Bexley, who was in the car with him, witnessed the incident and said, “Boom boom boom, Daddy on the ground.”

The Jacksonville Beach Police Department opened a murder investigation and searched for a 2004 to 2008 Ford F-150 pickup truck that was recorded fleeing the scene. The motive for the murder was unclear, as Bridegan had no known enemies and had a friendly relationship with his ex-wife and her husband.

Who was arrested for Bridegan’s murder?

On January 25, 2023, Jacksonville Beach Police Department chief Gene Paul Smith announced that Henry Tenon had been charged with conspiracy to commit murder, second-degree murder, accessory after the fact to a capital felony, and child abuse. Tenon was already in custody since August 2022 on an unrelated charge. He had been renting a house owned by Mario Fernandez at the time of the murder.

Mario Fernandez and Shanna Gardner-Fernandez were also arrested and charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and child abuse. They were accused of hiring Tenon to kill Bridegan in exchange for money and drugs. They had retained a high-profile criminal defense lawyer, Henry Coxe III, who claimed that they were innocent and that the evidence against them was weak.

What is the new evidence in Bridegan’s murder case?

On February 15, 2024, a new set of evidence consisting of 800 pages was obtained by the prosecutors and the defense attorneys. The evidence included phone records, text messages, bank statements, surveillance footage, and witness statements that shed light on two more suspects who were likely involved in the murder plot.

One of the suspects was identified as James Smith, a former police officer and convicted felon who had a history of drug trafficking and violence. He was allegedly the driver of the Ford F-150 pickup truck that was seen at the crime scene. He was also a friend of Tenon and had connections with Fernandez.

The other suspect was identified as John Doe, an unknown person who had communicated with Tenon and Smith through a burner phone. He was believed to be the mastermind behind the conspiracy and the one who provided the money and the drugs for the murder. He had also instructed Tenon and Smith to leave the car tire on the road to lure Bridegan out of his car.

The new evidence also revealed that Tenon had confessed to his role in the murder and had implicated Fernandez and Gardner-Fernandez as the ones who hired him. He had also told the police that Smith was the driver and that John Doe was the boss. However, he later recanted his confession and claimed that he was coerced by the police.

The new evidence has raised more questions and challenges for the prosecution and the defense. The trial for the three defendants is scheduled to begin on March 1, 2024. The fate of Jared Bridegan’s killers will be decided by a jury of 12 people.
