The production was made clear to be a direct sequel to the original film, and the project was first officially announced as a reboot in August 2020. Universal Pictures is planning to release the movie on October 13, 2023. According to Wikipedia, the plot of this movie involves the desperate father of a possessed child seeking Chris MacNeil, a person who has experienced similar occurrences.

According to IMDb, it is a sequel to the 1973 film about a 12-year-old girl who is possessed by a baffling demonic force, requiring her mother to seek the assistance of two priests in order to save her. It was officially announced in August 2020 that Morgan Creek Entertainment would be making a reboot of The Exorcist franchise for a new film.

The studio planned a tentative theatrical release date of 2021. Ben Pearson of Slice Movie noticed that the studio had recently expressed that it would “never endeavor to change The Exorcist” yet that it would likewise acquire the “gifts of their library titles’ unique makers before they push ahead with new sections”, possibly flagging the arrival of William Friedkin, overseer of the first film. Friedkin would dispel rumors later that year that he was involved in the project.

Burstyn announced at the beginning of 2022 that she had finished filming for her role. Given Burstyn’s age and the dangers of the COVID-19 pandemic, the production team worked with her to ensure that they had her part finished for the film, despite Green’s earlier statement that he would begin work on the sequel after completing Halloween Ends.
