AKA: The Birth of a Rock Legend
On May 23, 1967, Arthur Kaunang and his friends formed a rock band called AKA (Apotek Kali Asin), which means “Salt River Pharmacy” in English. The name was inspired by the location of their rehearsal studio, which was near a pharmacy by a river. The original members of AKA were:
- Ucok Harahap: vocals, guitar
- Arthur Kaunang: guitar, vocals
- Sonata Tandjung: bass, vocals
- Sjech Abidin: drums, vocals
AKA was one of the pioneers of rock music in Indonesia. They had a distinctive style, combining hard rock, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, and blues rock. They were known for their energetic and wild performances, which often involved smashing guitars, jumping off the stage, and setting fire to the drums. They also had a loyal fan base, who called themselves “AKAnatics”.
AKA released several albums, such as Do What You Like (1969), Reflection (1970), Crazy Joe (1971), and Hard Beat (1972). Some of their hit songs were “Do What You Like”, “Shake Me”, “Reflection”, “Crazy Joe”, “Berjalan di Hutan Cemara”, and “Kebyar-Kebyar”. They also participated in various music festivals and competitions, both nationally and internationally.
One of the most memorable moments of AKA’s career was their performance at Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) in Jakarta in 1973. It was a charity concert for the victims of the earthquake in Bali. AKA was the headliner of the show, and they delivered a stunning performance that left the audience in awe. However, things took a dramatic turn when Ucok Harahap, the lead singer, started to act strangely on stage. He seemed to be possessed by a spirit, and he began to scream, curse, and spit.
Arthur Kaunang also tore off his clothes and threw them to the crowd. He then grabbed a knife and stabbed himself in the chest, causing blood to gush out. The band and the audience were shocked and terrified by this incident. Ucok was rushed to the hospital, and he survived. Later, he claimed that he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and that he had no memory of what happened. Some people believed that he was cursed by a rival band, while others thought that he was trying to imitate Jim Morrison, the lead singer of The Doors, who died in 1971.

SAS: A New Chapter
In 1975, AKA disbanded, as Ucok Harahap joined another band called Duo Kribo, with Achmad Albar, another famous rock singer. Arthur, Sonata, and Sjech decided to form a new band, called SAS, which was an acronym of their names. SAS continued the legacy of AKA, but with a more mature and refined sound. They also experimented with different genres, such as jazz, funk, soul, and pop. They released several albums, such as SAS (1976), SAS II (1977), SAS III (1978), and SAS IV (1979). Some of their hit songs were “Sekali Lagi”, “Kau Harus Tahu”, “Cinta Pertama”, and “Kembali”.
SAS was also active in the music scene, performing in various events and shows. They also collaborated with other musicians, such as Fariz RM, Chrisye, Eros Djarot, and more. They were respected and admired by their peers and fans, as they showed their professionalism and versatility.
Solo Career and Conversion
In the early 80s, SAS broke up, and he pursued a solo career. He formed his own band, called Arthur Kaunang Band, and released several albums, such as Arthur Kaunang (1981). He also ventured into other fields, such as producing, composing, and arranging music for other artists, such as Tessa Kaunang, his daughter, who became a singer and actress.
However, Arthur’s life took a drastic change in 1984, when he had a near-death experience. He was involved in a car accident, and was severely injured. He was in a coma for several days, and he had a vision of heaven and hell. He claimed that he saw Jesus Christ, who told him to repent and follow him. He also saw his deceased father, who warned him about the consequences of his sinful lifestyle. He then woke up from his coma, and he felt a new sense of peace and joy. He decided to convert to Christianity, and he became a born-again Christian.
Arthur’s conversion also affected his music career. He stopped playing rock music, and he started to play gospel music. He also became a pastor, and he founded a church called Gereja Bethel Indonesia (GBI) Rock Ministry, which focused on reaching out to the rock music community. He also wrote a book about his testimony, called From Rock to Rock (1986), which became a bestseller. He also made a movie based on his book, called Rock (1987), which starred himself and his daughter Tessa.
