Plot
Solo Leveling is based on a webcomic of the same name, written by Chugong and illustrated by the late Jang Sung-rak (aka Dubu). The comic was serialized on KakaoPage, a digital platform for comics and novels, from July 25, 2016, to March 4, 2020, and has been published in print by D&C Media. The comic has also been translated into English by Yen Press and has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.
The plot of Solo Leveling is set in a world where hunters, humans who possess magical abilities, must battle monsters that have begun appearing all over the globe. These monsters emerge from portals called gates, which lead to dungeons filled with dangers and rewards. Hunters are ranked according to their power and skill, from E-rank, the lowest, to S-rank, the highest. Sung Jinwoo is an E-rank hunter, who is considered the weakest of all hunters. He barely makes a living by joining low-level raids and risking his life for meager rewards. However, his fate changes when he participates in a double dungeon, a rare and deadly type of gate that has two levels.
He barely survives the ordeal, but in the process, he is chosen by a mysterious program called the System, which grants him the ability to level up his stats and skills, just like in a video game. He also gains access to a personal inventory, quests, and other features that are exclusive to him. With this newfound power, he embarks on a journey to become one of the strongest hunters in the world and to uncover the secrets of the dungeons and the System.
